"Every class that I have taken has set an example and helped my progress toward my ultimate goal of teaching. It is like taking two classes. I learn the course's topic as well as learning different methods of teaching."
Amanda Wood was 12 when her mother was diagnosed with a complicated terminal illness. Medical bills skyrocketed and Amanda took on the responsibility of caregiver. A decade later, her mother is still holding her own against all odds, going in and out of remission - and giving birth to a second child. "I have matured quickly and learned a tremendous deal about life, death and enjoying family for the last ten years," says Amanda.
Amanda has traveled to Europe, Asia and across the United States. Her professors call her exceptionally inquisitive and motivated with a keen ability to lead. She is an active student leader and great at time management, thanks to years of balancing care for her mother with her classes. She applies critical thinking not just to the sciences but to arts and literature. Amanda plans to pursue medical and teaching degrees and is working toward becoming a professor of biology or geology at the college level. She says Monroe Community College "prepared me for the many questions students ask," and showed her "a 'can-do' attitude that helps students feel comfortable in the learning environment."
