“Being selected as a Young Scholar raised the already high expectations of me that I, my teachers and parents held. It raised my self-esteem and gave me a sense of pride.”
Alexandria (Alex) Puderbaugh has had a special passion for animals, particularly horses, since she had her first pet as a little girl. Through the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, Alex has been able to devote her time toward learning more about animals and science through dual enrollment courses at the local community college. Each year of high school, Alex has taken at least one college-level course, which she feels has prepared her more for her future life at college. “I’m not just taking classes where I feel like everything is a review.” Alex has also greatly enjoyed The Bloodhorse publication, courtesy of the Foundation. This magazine has offered Alex articles and valuable connections within the horseracing world. Alex even utilized this resource when selecting her college of choice – Baker University.
As a Young Scholar, Alex says she has benefited from studying music at band camps and from a trip to Europe with the Kansas Ambassadors of Music. Over the years, the Foundation has also supplemented Alex’s percussion lessons, mallets and sticks. Without this help, Alex would not have been able to spend such an inordinate amount of time performing and playing in the various musical groups at school, in the community, and abroad. Her trip to Europe was, “truly unforgettable.”
Alex is active in her community, volunteering at veterinary clinics, working on farms, and tutoring. She already knows what she wants to do with her life. She plans to work on a thoroughbred breeding farm and will pursue a major in biology and minor in business in college to further her career goals.
