Biography

Larissa Rymko says she knew from an early age that she wanted to spend her life working with people. Growing up in a poor, urban neighborhood, she says she saw firsthand the struggles that many people have to endure. “Now, and even when I was younger, I was always trying to understand the decisions that people made around me and the effects that they could have on individuals and on the community,” she says.

Larissa says being a Young Scholar has given her opportunities for academic enrichment and has also helped her grow as a person. “Each time I decided to attend a new camp, I experienced independence and self reliance that began shaping my character,” she says. “One summer class I took was philosophy. It was there that I formed my ideas about humanity and morality. Another program helped me find confidence in myself and develop a better work ethic.”

Yet another summer program prompted Larissa to found the Green Club at her school to promote environmental awareness. Larissa also participates in French and music clubs in school and is an active volunteer in her community. Larissa plans to pursue a career in clinical or research psychology.
