Biography

Ms. Baskin considers herself a "Renaissance Woman," equally at home with the intricacies of the Internet and an artist's studio, and wants to capitalize on her versatility in college and her later career. She completed courses in computer science and general studies before focusing on criminal justice as part of a pre-law major. She has compiled a perfect 4.0 grade point average at Ivy Tech State College, serving as president of Phi Theta Kappa Honor society and president of the Student Government Association.

"Not only have I developed a love for law," she wrote, "I discovered a talent for drawing after participating in two student art shows on my community college campus." As a result, she hopes to pursue a bachelor's degree in English as part of a pre-law course while adding a minor in studio art if her portfolio is accepted.

She has worked as a video and internet technician at Ivy Tech, a substitute teacher in South Bend schools, a church secretary, a store clerk, and an assistant at a bed-and-breakfast. In addition, Ms. Baskin served on a federal grand jury, sparking her interest in the law. In a major student project, she began a recycling program on campus despite a variety of obstacles. She received many honors and was named to the National Dean's List and chosen as Ivy Tech's Student Woman of the Year in 2003.

Ms. Baskin foresees herself as a lawyer and part-time teacher at a community college, devoting part of her practice to poor and underserved residents of South Bend. "Her goal is to become one of Indiana's top ten attorneys," wrote Lauran Sattler, one of her professors at Ivy Tech. "I think the other nine are going to have to work awfully hard. Deirdre raises the bar wherever she goes .. I cannot think of a single area in which she does not excel."
