Biography

The response Sara Sorrell usually gets when she says she is going to be a cardiologist is: "You're going to make so much money!" She knows they assume money equals success. But that is not Sara's yardstick. She spent two vacations in Ecuador with medical missionaries from the Timmy Foundation and totally agrees with its motto of "building healthy futures, one child at a time."

She has a photo of herself with an Ecuadorian boy ravaged by shingles. When she gets discouraged, she looks at his face to "remember the children who aren't able to see a doctor any time they are sick." Sara wants to become a physician to help those children.

Sara balances two core priorities: serious scientific research and concern for health care inequities. This year, she taught an honors class on health care ethics and laws and the links between health care and poverty. She wants to continue to study "the causes of cardiac electrical misfiring" and is determined to make time to volunteer for overseas medical relief missions through Doctors Without Borders.

She has also interviewed an impoverished woman near her campus for an essay in a book on "Women of Middletown: A Celebration of Spirit and Place."
