Biography

Sarah Dotson admires her mother, who was a single parent with limited resources but embraced opportunities for travel abroad and lifelong learning. From this role model, Sarah learned independence and curiosity. She focused on science but pursued many interests, using all the arts, sports, and academic resources available in her economically depressed hometown. She danced competitively starting at age six. She enjoys tap, jazz, ballet, modern, hip-hop, African, Caribbean, Latin, and other dance forms.

High school teachers inspired Sarah's pursuit of chemistry and biology. Sarah's sister persuaded her to look at undergraduate schools outside of Maryland, and generous financial aid smoothed the path to Colgate University. There, Sarah worked as a chemistry tutor. She won awards from the Department of Chemistry for being an outstanding teaching assistant, as well as for her honors thesis.

With her undergraduate degree in hand, Sarah had to choose between teaching high school science in New York City and coordinating clinical research at a Boston hospital. Sarah opted for Boston, where she discovered an interest in public health and taught evening MCAT classes. Sarah looks forward to this scholarship funding her graduate and professional education, in which she anticipates being surrounded with idealistic and supportive faculty and fellow students.

Sarah has a passion for travel and has backpacked in Costa Rica, Panama, and Nicaragua. She plans to return to the small villages she visited. "I intend to spend time abroad working with international health organizations, like Doctors Without Borders. As a physician, I will make an impact on a population in need of good health care and strong public health initiatives."
