Cooke Breakthrough Fellowship

Cooke Breakthrough Collaborative Summer Teaching Fellowships

The Cooke Breakthrough Collaborative Summer Teaching Fellowships offer one position in New York City and one position in Silicon Valley (San Jose, CA). The fellowship is a nine-week teaching residency for students who aspire to enter the teaching profession. The residential program provides fellows with two weeks of intensive training prior to teaching classes of middle school students during six-week summer sessions. Throughout the summer, teaching fellows are supported by professional teachers who serve as instructional coaches to supervise and guide the teaching fellows on instructional strategies, assessment, and classroom management. At the end of the summer, teaching fellows and instructional coaches review student surveys, evaluate their progress, and reflect on their learning.

The deadline for applying for this opportunity is February 23, 2016, with notification in March 2016. Undergraduate scholars who are rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and are in good standing, are eligible to apply. Scholars who have graduated already or who will graduate in spring 2016 are ineligible.

There is only one fellowship available at each location (NY and CA) through this opportunity. Interested applicants may apply to one or both locations, and should rank their site preference on the application. Although there are only two Cooke Breakthrough fellowship positions, there may be other Cooke Scholars selected in the general application process. Scholars selected as a general applicant would not be awarded the Cooke $5,000 stipend, but would be eligible to receive a smaller stipend through Breakthrough Collaborative (see website for details).  Applicants will be reviewed on best fit for the duties and needs of the fellowship, including relevant experience and skills as well as scholar goals and aspirations. Breakthrough looks for candidates who are resourceful problem-solvers, leaders, and collaborators in all areas.

The dates of the New York fellowship are June 8, 2016, through August 11, 2016. The dates of the Silicon Valley fellowship are June 13, 2016, through August 5, 2016.  At the end of the internship you must submit an internship report and an evaluation of the program. The stipend will be a cash award paid directly to the selected scholar the first week of June. Any travel, housing, or other expenses incurred for the internship must be budgeted out of the award by the recipient, as no additional funding will be provided. Both sites will offer subsidized housing for the Cooke Fellow.
