Scholar Responsibilities

Young Scholars

We expect Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars to think big and work hard. Young Scholars are responsible for:

  • Communicating once every two weeks with their Educational Adviser (EA)
  • Ensuring all information provided to the Foundation (grades, renewals, contact and financial information) is true and accurate and submitted in a timely manner
  • Attending mandatory events (Welcome Weekend and Scholars Weekend)

Think Big

We encourage Young Scholars to step outside their comfort zone to explore educational opportunities they never before thought possible. With the guidance and coaching of their EAs, Young Scholars are expected to:

  • Build a four-year plan that includes challenging courses, meaningful summer programs, and relevant extracurricular opportunities
  • Share academic and personal achievements and challenges
  • Develop academic and extracurricular S.M.A.R.T. (specific, measureable, attainable, realistic, time-bound) goals
  • Brainstorm and attend meaningful academic or extracurricular residential summer programs each year
  • Collaborate to build an annual Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) by researching potential resources and enrichment opportunities

Work Hard

Young Scholars put forth extraordinary effort to meet their goals, succeed in school, and build life skills. Young Scholars work hard to:

  • Maintain a strong academic record (As and Bs in an unweighted GPA calculation) while taking an appropriately challenging course load
  • Act with honesty and personal integrity
  • Demonstrate character and leadership
  • Be engaged in community service
  • Maintain a good disciplinary record
  • Follow through with the opportunities and services outlined in his or her ILP
