Alan Shaw graduated from Harvard University with a B.A. in Applied Mathematics in 1985. He received his M.S. from MIT in 1988 in Computer Science and his Ph.D. in Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Laboratory in June of 1995. Dr. Shaw’s dissertation at MIT dealt with using technology to address issues concerning education (e-learning), social empowerment (e-advocacy) and community building (neighborhood networking). He also works on “Games for Mathematical Understanding” as part of a curricular program called The Algebra Project. He is now working with Electronic Arts, Inc., looking for new ways to further this type of work.
Since 1997, Dr. Shaw has served as president of Imani Information Systems, an internet firm that has developed collaborative software and online courseware for colleges such as Babson, Northeastern, and MIT’s Sloan School, and for secondary schools such as Phillips Andover. In 2005 Dr. Shaw became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he is doing research involving using simulations and virtual reality for educational purposes.
