Dr. Andrew Thomas

Music Composition Mentor

Andrew Thomas was a student of Karel Husa at Cornell University, and Nadia Boulanger in Paris and earned his Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in composition from The Juilliard School where he studied with Luciano Berio, Elliot Carter, and Otto Luening. He has taught composition at the Pre-College Division at Juilliard for thirty-six years and in 1994, The Juilliard School appointed him the Director of the Pre-College Division.

In addition to composing, Dr. Thomas performs as a pianist and conductor. He has won many awards including a grant from The National Endowment for the Arts. The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars has cited Dr. Thomas as a Distinguished Teacher. Dr. Thomas has served for 11 years as Director of the Juilliard Pre-College Division and for 36 years overall as a faculty member of the Division. Dr. Thomas also is co-director of the Seoul Arts Festival and Academy.
