Dr. Daniel Willard holds a B.S. and M.S. in physics from Yale University. He received a Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1954. After serving in the United States Army, Dr. Willard taught physics at both Swarthmore College and Virginia Tech.
Dr. Willard worked for 38 years in the Office of the Secretary of the United States Army as a Special Assistant for Air and Missile Defense. During this time he worked with the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the National Atlantic Treaty Organization staff to analyze cost-effectiveness of military defense systems. He was involved in developing requirements, as well as research, development, and testing of these systems. Dr. Willard worked on such initiatives as the Patriot Missile Program. He retired in 2002.
Dr. Willard is currently a member of the American Physical Society, the Military Operations Research Society, Royal Astronomical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Since retirement, Dr. Willard has provided scientific support to the Montgomery County, MD Public School System, mentored college students, and served as a judge at several school science fairs. He currently resides in Bethesda, MD with his wife Linda.
