Dr. Yoram Vodovotz

Biomedicine Mentor

Dr. Yoram Vodovotz was born in Israel and came to United States in 1976. He pursued his undergraduate training in Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Ph.D. in Immunology at Cornell University Weill Graduate School of Medical Sciences in New York City. Dr. Vodovotz has also carried out two postdoctoral fellowships through the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, in which he studied inflammation in settings as diverse as sepsis, cancer, radiobiology and neurodegenerative diseases, using the tools of cell biology, molecular biology and small animal models.

Dr. Vodovotz then became the Director of Cellular and Molecular Research at the non-profit Cardiovascular Research Institute at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. Dr. Vodovotz is currently an Associate Professor of Surgery, Immunology, and Communication and Speech Disorders at the University of Pittsburgh, where he has continued to work on inflammation in sepsis, hemorrhagic shock, cancer, and vascular biology.

Most recently, Dr. Vodovotz has dedicated his energy and primary focus to directing an interdisciplinary team that is creating predictive mathematical models of the interlinked inflammatory and healing responses in various settings. In this capacity, he founded and is the Director of the Center for Inflammation and Regenerative Modeling at the University of Pittsburgh. He is a co-founder of Immunetrics, Inc., a company that is commercializing these mathematical models. He is also a co-founder and currently Secretary of the Society for Complexity in Acute Illness.
