First Lady Michelle Obama acknowledged Jack Kent Cooke Foundation grant recipient, the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI), at a White House ceremony announcing the launching of Joining Forces, a national initiative which callson Americans to join in supporting military families. President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Dr. Jill Biden all attended the event and spoke on behalf of the initiative, which includes efforts to improve educational opportunities for children of military servicemembers.
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s grant to NMSI will help bring Advanced Placement courses to students at four public high schools in under-resourced communities throughout Virginia. Two of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation-sponsored schools enroll large numbers of students from military families. NSMI made special mention of the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s support in its announcement of the expansion of its Initiative for Military Families (IMF). The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Vice President for Programs, Louis Caldera, a former Secretary of the Army, represented the Foundation at the White House ceremony on April 12, 2011.
