How to Build Your College List

One of the most important parts of the college application process is creating a strong list of schools. A good college list is more than a collection of names—it’s a thoughtful mix of options where you can see yourself thriving academically, socially, and personally.

Here are key areas to consider as you build your list:

Academics

  • Does the school offer strong programs in my intended major or areas of interest?
  • What are the average class sizes, and how accessible are professors?
  • Are there opportunities for undergraduate research, internships, or hands-on learning?
  • What types of academic support are available, like tutoring, writing centers, or advising?

Campus Life & Community

  • What type of campus culture feels like a good fit for me—big and spirited, small and close-knit, or something in between?
  • Are there clubs, organizations, or events that align with my interests?
  • How inclusive is the student body, and will I feel welcome there?

Financial Fit

  • What scholarships or financial aid opportunities are available?
  • How does the school support students beyond the first year?

Career Preparation

  • What career services are offered, such as job fairs, resume help, or alumni networking?
  • What are the job or graduate school placement rates in my intended field?

Student Support & Well-being

  • What mental health and wellness services are available?
  • How does the school support first-generation students?

The Takeaway

Building your college list is about finding schools where you can thrive—not just academically, but socially, personally, and financially. Take time to reflect on what matters most to you, research your options carefully, and create a balanced list that gives you both choice and confidence.
