A Simple Yet Complex Need: Cooke Scholar Zsombor Gal
The concept of life has always amazed Cooke Scholar Zsombor Gal. With the support of the Cooke College Scholarship Program, Zsombor is studying molecular biology at Princeton University to delve into how living organisms function. He hopes to become a neurosurgeon and train as a physician-scientist, so that he can split his time between clinical practice and laboratory work.
“Proper health is our simplest need; without it, we cannot do what makes us human,” says Zsombor. “To me, neurology is the most fascinating field of medicine, and is arguably the branch least understood yet most necessary to understand. Neurological disorders are devastating, and my wish is to treat those affected and therefore improve their quality of life.”
Being a Cooke Scholar means that Zsombor will receive up to $40,000 per year for up to four years to complete his bachelor’s degree. In addition to the scholarship funding, scholars also receive ongoing advising and opportunities for internships, mentorships, and graduate school funding.
“The advisers and other employees at the Foundation are always willing to help scholars with any problems they face. Having people to talk to about financial and educational concerns is reassuring and makes the idea of college more comfortable,” Zsombor shares. He has also enjoyed becoming part of a thriving community of fellow scholars:
