Resources for First-Generation College Students

Being a first-generation college student is an incredible achievement. More than half of college students in the United States are first-generation, meaning they are the first in their family to earn a bachelor’s degree or attend college at all.
While navigating applications, financial aid, and college life can feel overwhelming, there are many organizations dedicated to supporting first-generation students on their path to higher education and beyond. Whether you’re exploring colleges, searching for scholarships, building your professional network, or looking for mentorship, these resources can help you on your journey.
College Greenlight
College Greenlight helps students identify colleges that are a strong academic, financial, and personal fit.
Students can:
- Search for colleges and scholarships
- Use tools to evaluate college fit
- Find free college fly-in programs that allow students to visit campuses
- Access articles on college admissions, paying for college, and the transition to higher education
It’s a great starting point for students who are just beginning their college search.
Collective Success Network
The Collective Success Network is a nonprofit organization that supports first-generation and low-income students through mentorship, professional development, networking opportunities, and leadership programming.
Students can connect with mentors, explore career pathways, and build relationships with professionals and peers who understand the first-generation experience. Originally launched in Philadelphia, the network serves students through campus chapters and virtual programming, making many of its resources accessible to students across the country. We recommend checking out their available resources here.
I’m First! and UStrive
I’m First! is an online community that celebrates and supports first-generation college students.
Through student stories, blogs, college profiles, and videos, students can learn from others who have successfully navigated the college journey. The platform also highlights colleges that offer specialized support for first-generation students.
I’m First! is connected with UStrive, a free mentoring platform that pairs students with volunteer mentors. Through one-on-one virtual mentoring, students can receive guidance on college applications, financial aid, and making the transition to college successful. Mentoring is available for both high school and college students.
America Needs You (ANY)
America Needs You helps first-generation college students develop the skills and professional networks needed to succeed in college and beyond. They offer a Fellows program that supports first-generation college students in preparing for their careers.
Don’t Forget Your Campus Resources
Many colleges and universities now offer dedicated support programs for first-generation students. These may include mentoring programs, academic coaching, peer networks, first-generation student organizations, financial wellness resources, and career services.
If you’re a first-generation student, browse your college website or reach out to faculty to learn what resources are available. You may be surprised by the support that’s already in place to help you succeed.
