Yale-Bound Cooke Scholar Minh Nguyen Featured in The Oregonian
‘Amazing’ Portland high school student wins two of nation’s top full-ride scholarships
Minh Nguyen, who will graduate from David Douglas High on Thursday, won not one but two of the nation’s most prestigious full-ride scholarships.
The math-loving, Yale-bound immigrant from Vietnam won a Gates Millennium scholarship, awarded to the country’s 1,000 most promising low-income minority students each year. She also won a Jack Kent Cooke scholarship, awarded this year to the 94 brightest low-income high school seniors nationwide.
Nguyen, who has led the school’s nationally competitive rocketry team and served five times as a counselor at Outdoor School, took eight Advanced Placement classes at David Douglas, including calculus, physics and psychology, and loved them. She is one of 12 valedictorians in her graduating class.
